New To Padel

So what is padel?

Welcome to the fastest-growing sport in the world. Padel is highly addictive, incredibly social, and famously easy to pick up.

Comparison

Padel vs. Tennis

A question we hear often is - what is the difference between padel and tennis? While they share some similarities, padel is uniquely designed for longer rallies and more strategy over pure physical power.

The Court:

Padel courts are about a third of the size of a tennis court and are enclosed by glass walls and metallic mesh.

The Racket:

Padel uses smaller, solid rackets that are closer to the hand, making it much easier to control the ball.

The Walls:

The ball can bounce off the glass walls, keeping the ball in play longer and making the game incredibly dynamic.

The Serve:

Always underhand, completely removing the frustration of double-faulting with an overhead tennis serve.

The BASICS

Basic rules & how to play

Don't let the glass walls intimidate you. It takes less than five minutes to learn the basic rules of padel.

1. Team Movement

Partners don't split into a diagonal like tennis — they move together, at the same depth, shifting side to side as a unit to close gaps down the middle and protect the open sideline.

2. The serve

When serving, hitting the ball above waist height is illegal, the same way a foot-fault is illegal in tennis.

3. Floor first

Before a return can touch any wall, it must first bounce on the court floor.

4. Golden Point

Points are counted as 15, 30, 40, and Game. If the score reaches 40-40 (deuce), a team must win by two clear points to take the game.

How do I actually book a court or class?

All bookings are handled seamlessly through the Playtomic app. Simply download the app, search for Just Padel in Derby, and you will have instant access to our live calendar to book your beginner padel taster sessions or reserve a court.

Can you play padel if you are not fit?

Absolutely. Padel is played exclusively in doubles on a court much smaller than a tennis court, meaning there is less ground to cover. The game relies far more on strategy, positioning, and teamwork than pure physical stamina, making it incredibly accessible for all ages and fitness levels.

Do you offer any classes or sessions for children?

Yes, we run dedicated FREE Kids Sessions. These are fun sessions designed specifically to help younger players build confidence and learn basic racket skills.

Do I need to bring a partner or a full group of four?

You do not need to bring your own group! You can book onto our beginner padel introduction sessions Derby, where we pair you up with other new players. You can also use the Playtomic app to join open matches and meet the community.

What should I wear to my first session?

Comfort is key. Standard gym wear or activewear is perfect. For footwear, your everyday running shoes or trainers will work perfectly for your first game.

Are there facilities to shower and grab a drink after my game?

Absolutely. We provide premium changing rooms and showers for all players. After your match, you can relax in our Cafe & Bar, which offers fresh snacks, coffee, and other drinks.
